Formula 3: Three of three for Lance Stroll at Hockenheimring
Lance Stroll ended his championship-winning year in the 2016 FIA Formula 3 European Championship with three wins in the season’s finale at Hockenheimring. After taking two wins on Saturday, the 17-year-old Canadian was fastest again in Sunday’s Race 3. It was 14th victory in 30 races for Prema Powerteam driver.
Unlike in first two races at Hockenheim, Stroll wasn’t the pole sitter in Sunday’s race. He started from the fourth, sharing the second row with Callum Ilott (Van Amersfoort Racing). The poleman was Joel Eriksson (Motopark), next to him was Jake Hughes (Carlin). At the end of the race, after 23 laps, Eriksson finished in front of Hughes, but Stroll overtook both and crossed the finish line with 4.716 seconds gap.
Joel Eriksson – the Rookie of the Year
For Eriksson, it was ninth podium of the season, plus one victory at Spa. He finishes fifth in the overall standings but claims the Rookie of the Year honors, beating Ralf Aron (Prema Powerteam) and Anthoine Hubert (Van Amersfoort Racing).
In the overall Formula 3 European Championship classification, Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam) takes second place, ahead of George Russell (HitechGP). Nick Cassidy (Prema Powerteam) confirms his fourth place in the championship finishing fourth in the last race.
