Formula 3 Europe: Ben Barnicoat fastest at the wet streets of Pau
Ben Barnicoat (Hitech GP) wins the first race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at wet streets of French town Pau. The young Briton, who is the rookie in the F3 competition, drove like an experienced racer and dominantly took the Race 1 win ahead of two Prema Powerteam drivers – Nick Cassidy and Maximilian Günther. For Barnicoat, it was the second victory in the season.
Lance Stroll (Prema Powerteam) was the fastest qualifier and he secured the pole position for the first race of the third season’s round, but his car stalled on the starting grid and Stroll dropped to ninth place. Barnicoat, who was next to Stroll in the first row at the grid, takes the lead and remained in front until the end.
Barnicoat built an advantage of 5,5 seconds ahead of Gunther before the race was interrupted with Safety car period on Lap 9. The cause was Zhi Cong Li‘s crash. At the restart, Nick Cassidy attacked Günther and took the second place. The positions remained unchanged until the chequered flag.
All other positions in the top 10 were the same from start to finish, cause nobody wanted to risk with overtaking at the wet and narrow track. George Russell (Hitech GP) finished fourth, in front of Callum Ilott (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Mikkel Jensen (Mucke Motorsport) Ryan Tveter (Carlin) and Sergio Sette Camara (Motopark) took the seventh and eighth ahead of unfortunate pole-sitter Lance Stroll. Alessio Lorandi (Carlin) completed the top 10.
One more race is scheduled for today afternoon and third race for tomorrow afternoon.
