Formula V8 3.5: Vaxiviere triumphed at rainy Spa

Matthieu Vaxiviere wins in the second race of the Formula V8 3.5 weekend at Spa-Francorchamps to become the sixth different winner in six races of the 2016 season. In the race marked by torrential rain and few safety cars intervenentions the French in the SMP Racing’s car was better than a pair of AVF drivers Tom Dillmann and Alfonso Celis Jr.

The race started behind the safety car with Tom Dillmann as the leader. Louis Deletraz (Fortec Motorsports) got stuck on the grid after three laps. The re-start followed on lap 4. Dillman was still in the lead, ahead of Roy Nissany (Lotus) and Aurelien Panis (Arden Motorsport). On lap 6, the pit window was opened. Dillmann, Nissany, Vaxiviere and Pietro Fittipaldi (Fortec Motorsports) all completed their pit-stops while Panis led in front of Rene Binder. On Lap 7 Johnny Cecotto (RP Motorsport) hit Nissany’s car from behind at Raidillon and both drivers were forced to retire.

On lap 11, after Panis and Binder pitted, Dillmann retook the lead. He spun under the pressure of Vaxiviere and handed over the leading position to his countryman. Vaxiviere crossed the finish line with 6.268sec gap ahead of Dillman while Celis Jr was 10.277sec behind. Just eight drivers finished the full race-distance of 13 laps. Vitor Baptista scored his best result with fourth place, ahead of Panis, Binder, Yu Kanamaru and Giuseppe Cipriani.

With his second place, Dillmann remained in the championship lead with big gap ahead of Louis Deletraz and Aurelien Oanis. The next round of the Formula V8 3.5 series is scheduled for June 25-26 at Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet.
