GP3 Series: Albon secures another top podium spot for ART Grand Prix
Alexander Albon wins the second race of the opening round of the 2016 GP3 Series at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Albon secures second top podium spot for ART Grand Prix team after his teammate Charles Leclerc has won Saturday’s race.
Albon grabs the lead before the first turn, jumping from the third starting position in front of the pole-sitter Oscar Tunjo (Jenzer Motorsport) and Antonio Fuoco (Trident), who started fifth. Jake Dennis (Arden) had a slow start and dropped from second to fourth, ahead of Nyck De Vries (ART Grand Prix) who progressed four places from P9 to P5. Matevos Isaakyan (Koiranen GP) also made a huge progress from P11 to P6 at the start. One of the losers in the opening lap was Kevin Jörg (DAMS), who lost three positions and slipped to P7.
Jake Hughes (DAMS), Ralf Boschung (Koiranen GP) and Charles Leclerc completed the top 10 after Lap 1. On Lap 2 Leclerc passed by Boschung to take P9 and it was all that we saw of overtaking and position changing in the leading group of drivers. In the next 15 laps, all position remained unchanged, with just a few changes at the back of the field.
The most exciting moment of the race was a clash between Matthew Parry (Koiranen GP) and Santino Ferrucci (DAMS), who fought for the eleventh place. Parry forced Ferrucci to went off the track at the start-finish straight. At the end, Ferrucci took 11th position while Parry gets a 10sec penalty and dropped in the order.
The GP3 Series now has a month and a half free time before the second round at Red Bull Ring on July 1-3.
