Maiden GP3 victory for Nyck de Vries in the sprint race at Monza
Autodromo Nazionale Monza is the happy place for 21-year-old Dutch driver Nyck de Vries, as he scored his first GP3 Series victory today in the sprint race of the seventh championship round. De Vries stole the lead from ART Grand Prix teammate Alexander Albon on Lap 6 (of 17), on the restart which followed after the Safety Car period in the early phase of the race. The SC interruption was caused by the three-car crash in which championship leader Charles Leclerc was involved, together with Nirei Fukuzumi and Tatiana Calderon.
Trident’s Antonio Fuoco, who started from the pole position on the reversed grid, lost the lead from ART Grand Prix duo on Lap 2 and remained on P3 until the end of the race, taking his fifth podium of the season and defending his second place in the championship classification.
Charles Leclerc remained in the lead, despite no points in the sprint race, while Albon is still third in the championship order. Monza’s victory promoted De Vries to fourth place in the general standings, over Jake Dennis, who finished fourth in the sprint race.
