World RX - Latvia: Maiden win for Loeb, nightmare for Solberg
Sebastien Loeb (Team Peugeot-Hansen) scores his maiden victory in the FIA World Rallycross Championship today at Latvia RX, the tenth round of the 2016 season. Mattias Ekstrom (EKS RX) finished second in the inaugural World RX event at the Bikernieki National Sports Base, extending his lead in the championship classification. Timmy Hansen (Team Peugeot-Hansen) completed the podium.
Petter Solberg, who was second in the championship points prior to Latvian event, had a horrible weekend. In Saturday’s second qualifying race he fought against Ekstrom and pushed him, earning a disqualification after the race. It ruined his chances to enter Top 12 and Semi final. He tried to do something in Sunday’s qualifying races but finished 19th in the Intermediate classification.
Johan Kristoffersson (Volkswagen RX Sweden) was the fastest driver in two qualifying rounds and he was first in the points after four qualifying heats. The other two Quali winners were Timmy Hansen and Timur Timerzyanov. Winner of Semi finals were Sebastien Loeb and Mattias Ekstrom, so they secured the front row for the Final race. Both remained in those positions. Behind their back, Hansen progressed from fifth to third, taking the podium ahead of Andreas Bakkerud.
After ten championship round, with two more events in calendar (Germany and Argentina), Ekstrom is a leader with 228 points. Johan Kristoffersson is now second, overtaking Solberg by seven points (201-194). Andreas Bakkerud is fourth, just two points behind Solberg. Loeb collected 180 points and he is still in the game for the championship title, at least mathematically.
