World RX: Johan Kristoffersson wins the French round
Johan Kristoffersson is the winner of the Loheac RX, the eighth round of the 2016 World Rallycross Championship. It was the first win of the season for the Swedish driver in the Volkswagen RX Sweden’s VW Polo and his second World RX victory in a career. Andreas Bakkerud finished second in the Hoonigan Racing Division’s Ford Focus RS RX, ahead of Sebastien Loeb in the Team Peugeot-Hansen’s 208 WRX.
After Mattias Ekstrom won two qualifying heats on Saturday, Kristoffersson was an absolutely dominant driver on Sunday, winning remaining two qualifying runs, Semi-final and Final. Mattias Ekstrom, DTM star and driver/owner of the EKS RX team, was the leader in the Intermediate standings and the pole-sitter in his semifinal group but he failed to qualify for the Final, losing the third place in the last turn of the last lap, after his Audi S1 suffered the puncture.
Petter Solberg, Ekstrom’s biggest rival in the fight for the championship title, entered the Final and finished fourth, collecting valuable points for the championship lead. Reinis Nitiss finished fifth in the ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport’s Seat Ibiza, ahead of Ken Block (Hoonigan Ford Focus).
After eight rounds, Solberg has 181 points, five more than Ektrom. The victory in the French round promoted Kristoffersson to the third place. He now has 158 points, one more than Bakkerud. In the teams’ standings, EKS RX collected 275 points so far, seventeen more than Team Peugeot-Hansen.
The next round of the World Rallycross Championship is scheduled for September 17-18 at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
