ADAC GT Masters: Callaway Competition leads 1-2 finish for Corvette at Red Bull Ring
The Callaway Competition Corvette of Jules Gounon and Daniel Keilwitz won the ADAC GT Masters opening race at Red Bull Ring. It is the first win of the season for the French and German drivers who took the lead in the championship.
Thanks to Jules Gounon’s fine driving in qualifying, Callaway Competition Corvette #77 started from pole position. Mucke Motorsport’s Mercedes #26 of the DTM championship leader Lucas Auer and Sebastian Asch started from P2 while Herberth Motorsport #99 Porsche of Sven Muller and Robert Renauer, and RWT Racing’ Corvette #13 of Sven Barth and Maximilian Hacklander were in the second row but they swapped positions on lap 2.
Ricky Collard behind the wheel of Team Schnitzer BMW #42 did a great job right from the start and on the lap 7 managed to overtake #99 Porsche in the battle for the 4th place. At the same time, the top 3 standings remained unchanged but the gaps were very tight, so the mandatory pit stop played an extremely important role.
When the driver change has been completed and pit window was closed, the #77 Corvette of Daniel Keilwitz remained on the top, but the closest rival now was the #13 Corvette. With 20 minutes to go, the #26 Mercedes held the 3rd position and was followed by #21 Mercedes of HTP Motorsport with Luca Ludwig behind the wheel.
Unfortunately, 11 minutes before the end the race was red-flagged after the crash of Alex MacDowall’s #36 Porsche. The race was restarted after 15 minutes and Philipp Eng in #42 was the hero of the moment as he was able to move from 5th to the 3th position. Sadly, the safety car was deployed again with 5 minutes remaining when the GRT Grasser Racing Team #19 Lamborghini of Mirko Bortolotti stopped at finish straight.
That meant the race will be finished under the safety car, so Gounon and Keilwitz celebrated a victory. Sven Barth and Maximilian Hacklander completed 1-2 finish for Corvette while the #42 Mercedes of Ricky Collard and former Porsche Supercup champion Philipp Eng completed the podium.
Race 2 of the ADAC GT Masters round at Red Bull Ring will go on Sunday, 13.15 CET.
