DTM: Faultless Green wins Race 2 at Lausitzring
The Audi driver Jamie Green looked almost faultless in the second race of DTM weekend at Lausitzring and scored his second win of the season. After the second round of the 2017 season, Lucas Auer tops the standings with an advantage of 16 points to Green.
Robert Wickens in Mercedes won the pole position for the second race of the weekend after a great battle with the BMW driver Tom Blomqvist. Jamie Green in Audi and Gary Paffett in Mercedes occupied the second starting row while Maxime Martin and Rene Rast were behind them.
The start of the race was smooth but soon after Blomqvist received 5-seconds pit stop penalty for a jump start. After five minutes of racing the Brit has been overtaken by Green and Paffett while Nico Muller progressed to the 5th position.
The top 3 completed the pit stop in the space of a few minutes, with some 30 minutes to go. Wickens kept his lead in front of Green but Paffet dropped to the 4th, behind Mattias Ekstrom, who went in the pit very early in the race, just as Mike Rockenfeller who was 5th at that moment. The same standings were at the moment when all drivers completed a pit stop and there was still more than 20 minutes of racing.
With an unusual maneuver at Turn 1, Green took the lead from Wickens 15 minutes before the end and immediately built a solid advantage. At the same time, the Mercedes driver was under huge pressure by Ekstrom who finally overtook him on lap 38.
Green won the race, what is his 15th victory in the series, Ekstrom finished 2nd what is his maiden podium this year, while Wickens, who finished 2nd in the Saturday’s race, had to settle for the 3rd position. Gary Paffett, Mike Rockenfeller, Nico Muller, Rene Rast, Maxime Martin, Marco Wittmann, and Lucas Auer also scored points in this race.
