Global Rallycross Championship: Third triumph in a row for Scott Speed
Scott Speed is the Global Rallycross Champion for the third year in a row. The second place in season’s finale in Los Angeles was good enough for the 34-year-old driver of Andretti Autosport’s Volkswagen Beetle to make a hat-trick of titles after he triumphed previously in 2015 and 2016.
Speed’s teammate Tanner Foust scored his fifth win of the season in LA, finishing second in the championship standings for the second consecutive year. Having two most successful drivers, Andretti Autosport also has won Manufacturers’ title, after winning nine of twelve events in 2017.
“I am obviously overjoyed and relieved! During the week prior to the finale, I repeatedly found myself considering what could still happen with such a big lead. Now I have done it – and I salute everyone who worked on this project. It is a fantastic team success,” said Scott Speed after the finale.
“Champion driver for the third time, and champion manufacturer for the second – what an incredible success for Scott Speed and Volkswagen. Congratulations to the whole team at Andretti Autosport,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets. Since Volkswagen joined the Global Rallycross Championship in 2014, the Wolfsburg-based carmaker has 27 wins and 51 podiums to its name.
