IndyCar Series: James Hinchcliffe wins Grand Prix of Long Beach
James Hinchcliffe wins the Toyota Grand of Long Beach, the second round of the 2017 IndyCar Series. The driver of #5 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ Honda captured his fifth IndyCar victory in a career after a three-lap shootout at the end of 85-lap race at the 1.968-mile street circuit. It’s also the first win for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports at Long Beach.
The final yellow flag period was caused by Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay, who stopped on the track while running in the second place with five laps to go. His misfortune promoted Sebastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing) to the second place. Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden finished third.
With Long Beach victory, Hinchcliffe climbed from ninth to second in the championship points after two events. Bourdais leads Hinchcliffe by 19 points. The next race is Honda Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park on April 23.
