IndyCar: Newgarden wins at Mid-Ohio to take the championship lead
Josef Newgarden (Team Penske) scores his third win of the season and sixth win in a career today at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. With a victory at Honda Indy 200 race, Newgarden takes the lead in the 2017 IndyCar Series standings after thirteen races.
Newgarden was leading for 73 of 90 laps to win ahead of Team Penske teammate Will Power, who started the race from a pole position. Driving the #2 PPG Automotive Refinish Team Penske Chevrolet, Newgarden took the lead on lap 13 and stayed in front until the checkered flag, crossing a finish line 5.1556 seconds ahead of Power. Local favorite Graham Rahal (RLL Racing) finished third, scoring his first podium of the season after two wins at Detroit Grand Prix.
After thirteen races, Newgarden has 453 points on his account, seven more than his teammate Helio Castroneves, who finished seventh today. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, who finished ninth today, is just one points behind Castroneves.
The next race of the 2017 IndyCar Series is the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway on August 20.
