Martin Truex Jr collected the most playoff points during the regular Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. He doesn’t need that points because he continued to collect race victories also. He won for the fifth time this season in Playoffs opener at Chicagoland, repeating last year’s win in Chicago and taking his 12th win in a career.

The driver of the #78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota has won in a dominant way in the Tales of the Turtles 400 race, taking the checkered flag 7.179 seconds ahead of second-placed Chase Elliott. Before crossing the finish line, Truex led for 77 of 267 laps.

Playoff drivers claimed the top six positions in the final running order. Kevin Harvick finished third, followed of Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson and Brad Keselowski. Seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson came home in 8th, ahead of three more playoff drivers Matt Kenseth, Jamie McMurray and Ryan Blaney.

With this victory, Truex increased his playoff point total to 58 and earned an automatic advancement to the Round of 8. The Round of 16 has two more races, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (Sept 24) and Dover International Speedway (Oct 1).
