Super Formula: Hiroaki Ishiura wins at Fuji Speedway
Hiroaki Ishiura (P.mu/cerumo・Inging) wins the fourth round of the 2017 Japanese Super Formula Championship at Fuji Speedway after his teammate and polesitter Yuji Kunimoto suffered unfortunate failure of his Toyota. It’s the first win of the season for Ishiura, who takes the lead in the championship.
When the race started, Kunimoto stayed in the lead while Ishiura lost two place, being passed by second-row starters Yuhi Sekiguchi and Kazuki Nakajima. Kunimoto built seven-second advantage until lap 11, when Sekiguchi and Nakajima pitted. The leader Kunimoto pitted for tyres on lap 31 but returned to the pits in the next lap because of break problems. Kunimoto re-entered the race but retired few laps later.
Kunimoto’s misfortune promoted Ishiura into the lead. Suprisingly, Felix Rosenqvist was in the second place, as a result of the late-stop strategy. The Swedish driver took his first Super Formula podium, finishing 7.2 seconds behind Ishiura. Andre Lotterer completed a podium.
Yuhi Sekigushi finished fourth, ahead of Pierre Gasly. Takuya Izawa passed Kazuki Nakajima for sixth. The top 10 was completed by Jann Mardenborough, Koudai Tsukakoshi and Tomoki Nojiri.
The next round is scheduled for August 20 at Twin Ring Motegi.
