TCR Series: Back-to-back wins for Attila Tassi at Hungaroring
The young Hungarian driver Attila Tassi won both races of the TCR International Series sixth weekend at Hungaroring.
The guest driver and local crowd favorite Norbert Michelisz started from pole position on his debut in the series after beating Jean-Karl Vernay in qualifying. The Hungarian fans had something to cheer for after Attila Tassi started from P3 with Pepe Oriola besides him after Mato Homola’s results in qualifying were annulled.
Tassi in Honda Civic was the one who had the best start and he took the lead before going into the Turn 1. After the first half of the race, the M1RA team driver had a solid advantage to Michelisz and Vernay, while Roberto Colciago, Oriola, and Daniel Lloyd were well behind the top 3.
At the end, the 18-year-old Tassi scored his maiden victory in the series, beating his mentor and team boss Michelisz by 0.8s while Vernay completed the podium finishing 1.7s behind the winner. Colciago kept a provisional lead in the championship after finishing 4th in the first race of the weekend.
Jens Reno Moller started from the pole position in the second race of the weekend, with West Coast racing pair of Giacomo Altoe and Gianni Morbidelli behind. However, the start was pretty chaotic and three drivers were out of the race – Morbidelli in Volkswagen, Daniel Lloyd in SEAT and Davit Kajaia in Alfa Romeo.
The safety car was deployed and stayed on the track for three laps and when the race was restarted Moller led in front of Altoe, Tassi, and Colciago. Tassi took the 2nd position from Altoe on lap 5 and the young Italian had a really hard task to defend his position against the more experienced opponents.
The crowd became ecstatic after Tassi took the lead from Moller on lap 11 while at the same time Oriola overtook Altoe for the 3rd position. The Spaniard continued his progress after overtaking Moller on the penultimate lap and finished 2nd in the Race 2 while the Dane must be happy with the 3rd place what is his best result of the year.
After such a brilliant weekend, Attila Tassi is the new Championship leader, in front of Colciago and Vernay.
The next round of the TCR International Series will go on July 8-9 at Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.
