Thed Björk converts pole position into WTCC victory at Monza
Thed Björk (Volvo S60) converts pole position into his first win of the season and the second WTCC victory in a career today at Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.
Bjork started from pole in the Main race of the FIA World Touring Car Championship weekend but lost a lead before first turn to Tiago Monteiro (Honda Civic). The Swedish driver fought back on lap 2 with a clever pass in Parabolica. After that, he had no problems to retain the lead until the checkered flag, crossing the finish line 2.174 seconds ahead of Portuguese driver. Rob Huff (Munnich Motorsport, Citroen C-Elysee) concluded a weekend with one more podium, finishing in the third place.
Comparing to wild Opening race earlier today, the second race of the WTCC round at Monza was calm. The only interruption was a Safety Car period in the middle of the race following Tom Chilton’s technical problems with Citroen, so he stopped on the track.
Nicky Catsburg (Volvo) started fourth and finished fourth. Behind his back, Nestor Girolami managed to take P5 from Norbert Michelicz (Honda) in the closing laps. Mehdi Bennani (Citroen), Esteban Guerrieri (Chevrolet), Yann Ehrlacher (Lada) and John Filippi (Citroen) completed the top 10.
