Whincup, Dumbrell on the top of Triple Eight's 1-2-3 at Sandown 500

Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell are the winners of the Sandown 500 race, the 12th round of the 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship and the first round of the Pirtek Enduro Cup.

A duo in the #1 Red Bull Holden ZB Commodore led a dominant 1-2-3 victory of Triple Eight Race Engineering’s cars, with Shane van Gisbergen/Earl Bamber finishing second in the #97 Red Bull Holden and Craig Lowndes/Steven Richards third in the #888 Autobarn Lowndes Holden.

It’s the third victory for Whincup and Dumbrell together at Sandown, following triumphs in 2013 and 2014. For Whincup, it’s the fifth win of the season and 113th Supercars victory in a career.

The #1 Holden led from start to finish in the 161-lap race at Sandown Raceway

Behind three Triple Eight’s Holdens, Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat finished fourth in the #17 Shell V-Power Ford Falcon of DJR Team Penske, ahead of the #9 Erebus Holden of David Reynolds and Luke Youlden.

With his podium result, Shane van Gisbergen extended the championship lead over Scott McLaughlin to 55 points, with four events remaining, while Whincup in third is 338 behind.

The next race is the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama Circuit on October 4-7.
