Blomqvist set early pace
Tom Blomqvist set the fastest time in the first free practice session of the DTM race weekend at the Lausitzring. Rookie driver of the BMW team RBM clocked at time 1:18.145 on the 3.478 kilometre track.
He was 0.197 seconds faster than Audi driver Mattias Ekstrom and 0.210 seconds than another BMW team member Marco Wittmann. Four Audi drivers – Jamie Green, Mike Rockenfeller, Edoardo Mortara and Timo Scheider – finished the session at positions from 4 to 7.
Best placed Mercedes driver was Robert Wickens who clocked ninth fastest lap 0.584 seconds behind Blomqvist. The Lausitzring has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Mercedes, claiming eight wins at the circuit since 2005, but this year’s visit started quietly.
It is interesting that 19 drivers were in less than one second gap which promise interesting race on Saturday afternoon. Only driver who failed to set a result in the first free practice was Gary Paffett. Mercedes driver was unable to turn a lap due to a fuel system problem.
