Richard Branson, british businessman and chief of the Virgin Racing team, said that in the near future Formula E will become more popular than Formula 1.

Speaking at Formula E season finale in London, Branson expressed his positive view of the series saying: “I think in four or five years Formula E will be more popular than Formula 1. Business with the clean type of energy will power ahead of other businesses. Current technology is antiquated.”

But, FIA president Jean Todt, who also present in the British capital, think that Formula 1 also have a future and two competitions could go side by side: “It is a same family and they are not competing each other. I hope Formula E will grow. I don’t know why so many people are negative about Formula 1 in the last few months. It is fascinating, but I am wondering where is the passion to make it even better”.

Inaugural season of the Formula E ended last weekend with Nelson Piquet’s triumph with just one point ahead of Sebastien Buemi. In the Manufacturers’ championship Team e.dams Renault won the title.

Branson’s team Formula E team Virgin Racing finished fifth with 133 points making two race victories, both by Sam Bird, in Malaysia and in London, in the last round of the season.

Start of the new FIA Formula E season is scheduled for October 17th in Beijing.
