BTCC - Brands Hatch: Jackson dominant from pole to checkered flag

Mat Jackson was absolutely dominant this weekend at Brands Hatch BTCC finale. After setting a record-breaking qualifying lap yesterday he started from pole in today’s first race and remained in the lead to the checkered flag, without compromising his place. Driving the Motorbase Performance’s Ford Focus ST he also set the fastest lap time and will start from pole in Race 2 later today.

Aron Smith in Team BMR’s Volkswagen CC and Adam Morgan in WIX Racing’s Mercedes A-Class fielded the podium. They finished the race on the same places they started, in front of four title contenders. Team BMR’s Colin Turkington and Jason Plato finished fourth and fifth respectively, after being passed by Gordon Shedden (Honda Yuasa Racing) in the opening lap. Shedden’s team-mate Matt Neal finished seventh. Andy Priaulx in West Surrey Racing’s BMW finished eighth, ahead of Josh Cook’s Chevrolet and Rob Collard’s BMW.

As four championship contenders finished from fourth to seventh, their positions in championship classification remained unchanged. With two more races scheduled for today, Shedden has 335 points, 22 more than Plato and 29 more than Turkington. Neal is fourth with 297 points. Anfrew Jordan fell down from championship fight after finishing only 19th in the first race.

The race was interrupted with two Safety car periods. In Lap 1 Dave Newsham and Alex Martin almost simultaneously crashed in the same turn, in Lap 5 Stewart Lines went off track and got stuck in gravel trap. Newsham pitted and resumed the race, with fourth fastest lap time, so he will start from second row in the second race.
