Buemi wins Formula E season opener

Sebastien Buemi is the winner of the Beijing ePrix. At the start of the Formula E new season, the championship runners-up was at the top from the start to the end, and no one ever questioned his lead.

The E.Dams Renault pair was in the front row at the start, with Sebastien Buemi at the top and Nicolas Prost in the second place. Mahindra’s Nick Heidfeld and Abt Sport’s Lucas di Grassi were in the second row, while Jean-Eric Vergne in the DS Virgin Racing car started from fifth place. As expected, neither Trulli team cars started the race.

But, after the start, Heidfeld moved up to second slot overtaking Prost, while Bruno Senna moved up to fifth. Prost soon lost third place to Di Grassi, so we could see the interesting start of the race, with very tight gaps between drivers, especially after the yellow flag was shown post Simona de Silvestro’s accident in lap 3 when she hit the wall.
After the restart, Buemi had a solid 5seconds advantage ahead of Heidfeld, di Grassi and Prost, while Senna was well behind. Soon he lost his place to Vergne and Duval. Those were very disappointing moments for champion Nelson Piquet who was on the bottom of the grid. Even a fan boost couldn’t help him.

Contact between Jacques Villeneuve and Antonio Felix da Costa in lap 14, just after pit stop, caused another full court yellow flag. After the restart, Prost perfectly overtook Heidfeld for the third position started chasing Buemi and di Grassi, while at the opposite side of the grid, Piquet retired due to technical problems.

With six laps to go, Prost was just behind di Grassi, but the  Frenchman then lost his rear wing, and still pushed very well. Finally, he was forced to retire with two laps to go. But, his teammate won the opening race of the season, comfortably beating di Grassi and Heidfeld with a gap bigger than 11 seconds.
