Porsche 991 RSR is latest version of the RSR based on the 991 model for the LM GTE category and was introduced in 2013. This model is based on the 911 Carrera model because 991 GT3 was not in production at the time of announcement.

991 RSR has revised aerodynamics, lower suspension and lighter gearbox. The six gears are selected via paddles on the steering wheel. The 460 horse power, 4.0-litre six cylinder boxer engine was taken from the predecessor and optimized in detail. A new fishbone front suspension replaces previously used McPherson struts.

One of the priorities in the development of the new 911 RSR was the more evenly balanced weight distribution. The center of gravity is also significantly lower than that of its predecessor. Carbon fiber played a crucial role in the new design. The front and rear mudguards, front and rear lids, doors, underbody, wheel arches, rear wing, dashboard and center console are constructed from the very light and strong material.

The look is dominated by the flared mudguards and the deep cooling air intakes at the front. The radiator is centrally located in the front and even more effective than in the previous model and in the same time cockpit air conditioning became more efficient. Body parts were adapted for the quick change allowing easier and shorter maintenance and repairing.

For the 2013 season Metzger engine of the 997 RSR GT3 model was retained. Manthey Racing Team was chosen to run the cars in the FIA World Endurance Championship that year, and the team achieved its best result at the 24 Hours of Le Mans where the 991 RSR claimed first and second place in the GT class. For the next year, Porsche announced partnership with CORE Autosport to, under the name of Porsche North America, run two RSRs in the former United Sports Car Championship.

Porsche won the Manufacturers’ title so there was immediate success. Manthey Racing remained Porsche’s partner in the World Endurance Championship 2014 in which they won second place in GT Manufacturers’ championship.
