Ferrari Challenge APAC: Merckx wins season opener at Suzuka
The new Ferrari Challenge Asia-Pacific has started on Saturday at Suzuka circuit and the winner of the race 1 is Florian Merckx.
Belgian racer, who was third in European Trofeo Pirelli last year, won pole position but lost as he got two-place grid penalty due to crossing a white lane. But, he managed to fight back in the race beating Renaldi Hutasoit from Indonesia and Toru Tanaka from Japan. The 2015 Asia Pacific champion Steve Wyatt finished fourth.
The American James Weiland was the fastest in this class, after very intensive and close battle with Canadian Eric Cheung, while Hidehiko Hagiwara from Japan was third, well behind the top two drivers.
The Coppa Shell class race was won by Chinese Liang Wang who was faster than the Japanese drivers experienced Ken Seto and Yugo Tanabe. Wang’s victory was a bit of surprise as he scored only two podium finishes in 13 races last year.
The start of the race 2 of the Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific at Suzuka is scheduled for Sunday 5.30 CET, with 35 drivers from 12 countries on the grid.
