Formula Renault 2.0 NEC: First victory for Max Defourny

As a part of the supporting program of the 24h Spa endurance race at the famous Belgian track we will see two races of Formula Renault 2.0 NEC (Northern European Cup). The winner of the first race was Belgian driver Max Defourny (ART Junior Team). It was season’s first victory for the 16-year-old Belgian, who started from pole position and remained in the lead till the end of the 25-minute race.

Defourny managed to win ahead of Kevin Jörg (Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Callan O’Keefe (Fortec Motorsports). The leader of the championship Louis Deletraz (Josef Kaufmann Racing) finished fourth and is still at the top of standings after eight races in the 2015 season.

A total of 25 drivers started the race and almost all of them managed to finish. The only one who retired was Ferdinand Habsburg (Fortec), who pitted in the first lap. The race was by and large clear of incidents and crashes, though one could see a lot of overtakings. Kevin Jörg started third and jumped to second in Lap 2, while Deletraz overtook Ukyo Sasahara (ART Junior Team) for fourth place in Lap 4.

Jehan Daruvala (Fortec) started and finished sixth. Other racers who finished in the Top 10 included Dries Vanthoor, Nikita Mazepin (both Josef Kaufmann Racing), Darius Oskoui (ART Junior Team) and Stefan Riener (Koiranen GP). The hero of the day was Charlie Eastwood (AVF), who started from the back of the grid because of changing of damaged monocoque, but finished eleventh.

“I have lived here my whole life and I am very happy to have my first win at this beautiful place. I led the race from the beginning and realy enjoyed myself. Winning this race here during the Spa 24 hours weekend is also special as my father won this race here in 2000. I will start from second place tomorrow and hope for a good result again,” said Max Defourny.

The second race is scheduled for tommorow morning at 9.45am.
