Hamilton roars back to win pole position in Spain
Lewis Hamilton won the pole position for the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix after putting awesome display during the qualifying session at Circuit de Catalunya. This is third pole position for the reigning champion in 2016 and he will have a good opportunity to break Rosberg’s streak of four consecutive wins.
Mercedes was dominating since the first minute. In the first qualifying round, Nico Rosberg was the fastest with a lap time 1:23.002 what was 0.212s better than the lap time of his teammate and reigning champion Lewis Hamilton. Interestingly, both Red Bull cars were faster than Ferrari in Q1.
In the Q2 Hamilton was 0.6s faster than Rosberg and Mercedes still were too fast for the others. Max Verstappen impressed being ’only’ 1.019s slower than the Silver Arrows and again being faster than both Ferraris.
The battle for the last places in the final qualifying round was very close. At the end, Esteban Gutierrez, Jenson Button, Daniil Kvyat, Romain Grosjean, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg left short-handed while local favorite Fernando Alonso scraped into top 10.
Last qualifying round was pretty exciting. Lewis Hamilton drove a perfect lap and set the time 1:22.000 what was 0.280s than the time set by Rosberg. Daniel Ricciardo also did a good job as he was third and will start from the second row on Sunday, accompanied with his new teammate Max Verstappen.
Raikkonen and Vettel are surely disappointed with positions five and six and they must be very careful knowing that Valtteri Bottas is just behind them. Carlos Sainz Jr. was eighth while Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso will start from the fifth row.
