Uwe Alzen is a German endurance and sports car driver who gained lot of success both in Germany and internationally. Among other great results, he has several victories in major endurance races on his account: Nurburgring 24h twice (2000, 2010), Spa 24h once (1993) or GT class at Le Mans 24h (1999).

Winning the titles in Porsche Carrera and Porsche Supercup

Uwe Alzen who was born in August 1967 in the town of Kirchen, in the Rheinland-Palatinate state. His professional career started in late eighties when he raced with private teams before switching to Porsche Carrera Cup Germany. Two years later he won the title and moved to Porsche Supercup in 1993. He was crowned as a Porsche Supercup champion in 1994 winning 5 out of 9 races.

Uwe had two spells in Porsche racing series

From 2003 to 2008 Uwe returned to Porsche Supercup but drove only two full seasons in which he was very successful. Behind the wheel of Porsche 997 GT3 he finished 2nd in 2006 while one year after he was 3rd. He also raced in Porsche Carrera Cup and in 2006 he was 2nd overall.

2001 DTM vice-champion

At the same time, Alzen drove in the popular Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and in 1995, while driving a Mercedes 190E he won the privateer B-Class championship. When the DTM was revived in 2000, he returned to the series driving an Opel Astra V8, scoring 3 wins and finishing 5th in the standings.

He stayed in DTM for another two years, but this time as a Mercedes driver. In 2001, he finished the season as a runner-up, losing to legendary Bernd Schneider, while in 2002 Alzen was 6th.

Short spell in the ITCC

He also raced in International Tourng Car Championship in mid 1990s with Opel Calibra 3.0 V6 4x4 race car with similar specifications as a DTM racer from the same period. However, Alzen failed to win a single race during one and a half season, but he had many podium finishes, proving that he is able to have good results in various championships.

Endurance racing was best suited for Alzen

Uwe definitely made his name in various endurance races. In 1993, he won the shortened 24 Hours of Spa, driving a Porsche 911 RSR alongside Christian Fittipaldi and Jean-Pierre Jarier. In 1998, he was first in the class and second overall in 24 Hours of Daytona while next year he won the GT class at Circuit de la Sarthe, driving alongside Patrick Huisman and Luca Riccitelli.

The stream of successes continued in 2000 when Alzen won 24 Hours of Nurburgring driving a Phoenix Racing Team's Porsche with Michael Bartels, Bernd Maylander and Altfrid Heger. Alzen added class victory in 2003 Bathurst 24h to his trophy collection before fans voted him Driver of the Year in 2004. In 2006, he finished as a runner-up in Nurburgring 23h while his second overall triumph arrived in 2010, with Schnitzer Motorsport's BMW M3 GT2. The following year he won the E1-XP2 class, driving alongside Augusto Farfus, Jorg Muller and Pedro Lamy.

Huge experience of an accomplished driver

During his career, German driver also competed in ADAC GT Masters Series, Audi Sport TT Cup, Le Mans Series, Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup, Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, American Le Mans Series, Speedcar Series, FIA GT Championship and 24h Series, but he was and still is most active in VLN.

That experience helped him achieve a VLN Nordschleife Lap record of 8:02.418 in 2013. Despite the fact that he is not the youngest driver on the grid, Uwe is still one of the fastest and most experienced active German racers. There is no doubt that he will achieve amazing results in the future.
