Lauda and Hunt teammates in EuroNASCAR
Forty years after the famous 1976 Formula 1 championship title battle between James Hunt and Niki Lauda, in which Hunt won by just one point, we will see their names in the competition, this time as teammates. Their sons Freddie Hunt and Mathias Lauda will be teammates in Austrian team DF1 Racing in 2016 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series.
“I am very pleased to drive for DF1 Racing Team in NASCAR Whelen Euro Series next season alongside Matthias Lauda. DF1 Racing Team is a very competitive team and they have a proven record of winning and competing week in, week out at the top. I’m looking forward to pre-season testing next year so I can get to grips with these cars,” said 28 years old Freddie Hunt.
After racing in various open-wheeler and touring car series, Hunt will make his NASCAR debut in Valencia, Spain, on 22-24 April 2016, behind the wheel of the #77 DF1 Racing Chevrolet SS. Mathias Lauda who raced the full 2014 season for the Austrian team and won the first ever NASCAR Whelen Euro Series oval race in the rain at Tours Speedway, is racing this year on a partial schedule and will announce his program later, but he’s looking forward to work with Freddy and get back at the wheel of the #66 DF1 Racing Chevrolet SS.
“As far as pure racing goes, the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series is the best you can drive. I really look forward to next year and I hope I can do as many races as possible and that with Freddie we can for a very strong team,” said Lauda.
