Mercedes confirms Ocon for 2016 DTM campaign
After the reigning DTM champion Pascal Wehrlein left Mercedes for Manor Formula 1 team, the Stuttgarters reacted quickly and named Esteban Ocon as their eighth driver for the next season.
The 19-year-old Frenchman is the Renault F1 team reserve driver, but he is also a member of the Mercedes’ development programme. Ocon won the GP3 Series title in 2015 and is considered as one of the hottest prospects. Even though he will be the only rookie in the 2016 DTM season, this competition is not completely strange to Ocon as he replaced Daniel Juncadell during Friday test at the final day of last season.
Eager to race
“I am really grateful to everyone involved for this fantastic chance. Since having participated in free practice during the final race weekend of the 2015 season at Hockenheim, I am eager to race in the DTM. Of course, there are still many things to learn for me in the early stages, but it is my goal to become a contender for victories as quickly as possible,” said Ocon.
Rest of Mercedes drivers line-up remained unchanged from last year – Garry Paffet, Lucas Auer, Robert Wickens, Paul Di Resta, Maximilian Gotz, Daniel Juncadella and Christian Vietoris.
