Rosberg on pole in Sochi, Hamilton's woes continues

Nico Rosberg have an excellent chance to continue his winning streak after he has won pole position for the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi Autodrom.

Sauber, Manor and Renault out of Q2

In the first qualifying round three teams were eliminated – Sauber, Manor and Renault. Swiss team looked especially unconvincing and this session proved that Sauber’s problems are really big and hard to beat. Lewis Hamilton was the fastest in Q1 with a lap time 1:36.006.

Rosberg takes the reigns

In the following round, championship leader Nico Rosberg was the fastest (1:35.337) what was almost 0.5s better than the Hamilton’s result. Eliminated from the Q3 were Esteban Gutierrez, Fernando Alonso, Romain Grosjean, Jenson Button, Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz Jr.

The start of the final qualifying round was marked with a failure of power unit of Hamilton’s Mercedes, so the reigning champion on Sunday will start from 10th position. That meant Rosberg had clear road to win another pole position. And the German did it easily. With a result 1:35.417, he was 0.7s ahead of Sebastian Vettel who will be moved back due to five-place grid penalty.

That means Valtteri Bottas will be in front row beside Rosberg, while Kimi Raikonen and Felipe Massa will start from the row two. Daniel Ricciardo and Vettel are in row three, Sergio Perez and home crowd favorite Daniil Kvyat are behind them while Max Verstappen and Hamilton are on positions 9 and 10.
