Established more than 22 years ago, German racing team Project 1 became the most successful Porsche Cup team worldwide and one of the best outfits for 911 drivers and racing in the history of the Porsche cup championships.

Almost 25 years of active racing

The history of Project 1 started in 1992 when the owner Hans-Bernd Kamps started racing in the Porsche Classic Car Trophy, in the Ferrari Porsche Challenge and the Porsche Club. Since 1994, the Project 1 had its first season in Porsche Supercup which they won in 1998 for the first time. During that period, Project 1 gained its biggest and most important sponsor Deutsche Post which helped the team achieve over 138 podium places in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, Sports Cup and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East. That is an impressive result considering that Project 1 is not as big and factory backed racing outfit and it is fueled only by passion and love of racing.

Hard times and tragic death of Sean Edwards

However, every racing team experiences a mix of good and bad times and after the good period for Project 1 came late 2013 when their best driver, Sean Edwards was killed in non-racing accident in Australia. Disaster struck again when the team’s racing engineer Konstantin Kotitsas died unexpectedly later that year. The team was under a big pressure with unexpected loss of two very important members and there was a rumor that Hans-Bernd Kamps would even pull out of racing. Fortunately, that didn’t happen and Project 1 pulled trough.

2015 season, the best in the history of the team

But after the unfortunate period for the team, the 2015 season proved to be the best in Project 1’s history when their star driver, Philipp Eng won both Porsche Supercup and Carrera Cup Germany titles and their junior driver, Matteo Cairoli won the rookie title in Supercup. Besides these two drivers, there are a few more important names in the team. The first one is the very prominent Porsche cup ace Sven Muller who proved to be very fast and capable driver with very good results during the 2015 season. Over the last year, his driving earned him the title of 2016 favorite and he had already been described as one of the future champions. Other two names worth pointing out are Sean Johnston, American driver and Ola Nilsson, the talented Swedish racer who are both learning much from their older colleagues and preparing themselves to continue the winning tradition of Project 1 racing team.

Looking into the future for Project 1 team it is easy to say that the team has survived the hard times in 2013 only to come out stronger in 2015 and achieve so much by believing in its drivers. With the help of the sponsors and its experienced crew of technicians and mechanics it is safe to say that Project 1 will be the dominant force in Porsche Cup series all over the world in 2016 also.
