Verstappen fastest in FP1 in Mexico
Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen set the fastest lap time during first Free practice for the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix.
Earlier rainfall has left the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez wet and greasy and that caused a lot of trouble as almost every driver had slips off in the opening minutes and everybody complained about very low rear grip. Anyway, after the first half an hour, Valtteri Bottas had the fastest lap time of 1:30.678.
Next 30 minutes were more interesting as many drivers changed on top of the standings – Daniel Ricciardo, Jolyon Palmer and finally Nico Rosberg with 1:27.226. But, the German was soon in trouble when he had a lock-up and his overheated brakes went on fire.
At the beginning of the last 30 minutes of the session, Daniil Kvyat set new best lap time, but in the final moments of the practice, Max Verstappen beat that time, becoming the only driver with lap time under 1:26, as his result was 1:25.990. Ferrari pair Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel were third and fourth respectively, while champion Lewis Hamilton was only 11th.
