Jacques Villeneuve, the Formula 1 world champion from 1997, will take part in the new FIA Formula E season as a driver of the Venturi team.

The winner of 11 Formula 1 Grands Prix arrived in Venturi as a replacement for Nick Heidfeld. Villeneuve’s partner in the new season will be Stephane Sarazzin, a Frenchman who had very good inaugural season and recently extended his contract.

Villeneuve spent the last week testing the car —Venturi VM200-FE-01— at Paul Ricard circuit. The Canadian racer, after a successful career in Formula 1 also participated in the NASCAR series and Rallycross.

“This is the first time in several years that I will participate in a full championship. It has been 10 years since I have driven on that kind of track with a single-seater, but it’s like riding a bike, you never forget. Last season, each time I met a driver from the Formula E, they would point out that it is a really interesting championship. I am excited because the atmosphere in the team is great and that has a very big influence,” said 44-year-old Villeneuve.
