Porsche Supercup in Barcelona: Lights to flag victory for Matteo Cairoli
Matteo Cairoli wins the season-opening race of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The 2014 Italian Porsche Carrera Cup champion and current Porsche Junior converted his domination from qualifying to the secure victory at the Spanish Grand Prix circuit. The other two podium spots are also taken by Porsche juniors – Sven Müller and Matthieu Jaminet.
Cairoli started the race from pole and he was leading from lights to flag. Müller started from third and overtook Jaminet on the opening lap, after that both of them remained at the same positions.
Ben Barker made a good progress from P8 on the starting grid to fourth place after 14 laps of racing, half a second ahead of Michael Ammermüller. Jeffrey Schmidt was better than Robert Lukas in the battle for the sixth place while Zaid Ashkanani took 8th place ahead of Philip Frommenwiller. Paul Rees completed the top 10.
Twenty-three drivers started the race, two of them didn’t reach the finish line. For Christian Engelhart, the race was over on the third lap after the clash with Schmidt, while Santiago Creel went off to the gravel trap on Lap 4 and caused the Safety Car intervention.
