Joel Eriksson wins a demolition derby at the streets of Pau
The Formula 3 European Championship points leader Joel Eriksson extends his lead in the championship by winning the first race of the Pau Grand Prix, the third round of the season. The 18-year-old driver of Motopark inherited a lead when polesitter Callum Ilott crashed out in the opening lap at the Pau street circuit, remaining in front until the end of the race. Lando Norris (Carlin), the second-placed driver in the championship, started from P2 and ended a race in the same position.
Van Amersfoort Racing’s Joey Mawson was close to his first podium of the season but he crashed out in lap 18, with six minutes to go. Jake Dennis hit the same wall few moments later, causing the second Safety Car intervention. The first SC interruption was caused by Guanyu Zhou’s crash on lap 6.
After all that crashes, Maximilian Gunther (Prema Racing) reached the podium and moved to third place in the overall championship standings. Nikita Mazepin, Ralf Aron, Harrison Newey, Pedro Piquet, Mick Schumacher, Ferdinand Habsburg and Jehan Daruvala completed the top 10. Of nineteen starters, 14 drivers finished a race.
