Formula 3 European Championship: Norris and Habsburg winners at Spa
Lando Norris (Carlin) and Ferdinand Habsburg (Carlin) are the winners of two Saturday’s races of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. For Norris, it was his fourth win of the season while Habsburg managed to win for the first time.
Lando Norris started the sixth round of the season in a dominant way, being fastest during Thursday’s qualifying sessions and securing pole positions for all three races at the iconic Belgian Grand Prix circuit. Then, on Saturday, he converted pole to the victory in Race 1.
Fourth win for Lando Norris
The Race 1 was interrupted by Safety Car intervention on Lap 1 following a collision between Callum Ilott and Jake Hughes, who started from P2 and P3. Hughes crashed out while Ilott was received a drive-through penalty and dropped to the back of the field.
Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam) inherited the second place but he lost that position on Lap 7 to Nikita Mazepin (Hitech). Until the end of the race, the 18-year-old Russian driver built a significant advantage over Günther and reached his first podium of the season.
There were lots of changes among the points scorers during the 15-lap race. Jehan Daruvala (Carlin) finished in the fourth place, ahead of Joey Mawson (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Mick Schumacher (Prema Powerteam). Harrison Newey (Van Amersfoort Racing), Ferdinand Habsburg (Carlin), Joel Eriksson (Motopark) and Pedro Piquet (Van Amersfoort Racing) completed the top 10.
Maiden win for Ferdinand Habsburg
In the second race, Lando Norris was early out of the race following his collision with Guanyu Zhou while battling for the lead on the opening lap. Callum Ilott, who started second, inherited a lead but not for long. On lap 2, Maxi Günther took the lead. Ilott dropped back to P3, behind Jake Hughes, but fought back and returned into the lead on lap 7.
Then, on lap 8, Ilott lost the lead again to Günther. Finally, on lap 12, Habsburg slipstreamed Günther to take the lead for the first time in his F3 career. Joel Eriksson, who started from P12, made a fantastic progress through the field and progressed to P2 at the end.
Maxi Günther took another podium of the weekend to defend his championship lead. Other points scorers in the Race 2 are Jake Hughes, Nikita Mazepin, Jehan Daruvala, Callum Ilott, Ralf Aron, Mick Schumacher and Joey Mawson.
After 17 races, Günther is a championship leader with 266 points, ahead of Norris (223) and Eriksson (222). One more race is scheduled for tomorrow.
