ADAC GT Masters: BMW's Klingmann and Baumann wins first race at Spa

The winners of the first ADAC GT Masters race at Spa-Francorchamps are BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert’s drivers Jens Klingmann and Dominic Baumann.

Sebastian Asch defended pole position in front of aggressive Martin Ragginger in Porsche 911 GT3 R who overtook Jens Klingmann in BMW Z4 GT3. After just 90 seconds safety car went on the track after rookie Stefan Wackerbauer in Audi R8 LMS Ultra crashed into the wall and C.Abt Racing team’s car #1 had to withdraw from the race.

First three cars were very close in the opening laps, but after 11 minutes Klingmann took the lead after nice maneuver in the chicane. Schubert’s BMW driver had a clear road after that and quickly made a difference of 1.5 seconds in front of Asch and Ragginger who was soon penalized with five seconds. Luca Stolz in Bentley Continental GT3 was fourth after 15 minutes while Claudia Hurtgen in BMW was fifth.

Standings at the top of the grid remained unchanged when pit window was opened, but after drivers change there was few upheavals. Dominik Baumann kept BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert’s #80 at the top, Zakspeed’s #21 with Luca Ludwig stayed on second while up to third moved Jeroen Bleekemolen in Bentley. Uwe Alzen in BMW was fourth and Bentley’s Klaus Bachler fifth.

With ten minutes to go it looked like everything was decided. Dominik Baumann had advantage of more than eight seconds in front of Luca Ludwig, while the battle for third was more interesting as three cars were in two seconds gap.

Baumann with routine kept first place until the end and brought first victory for  BMW Sports Trophy Team this season. Second place won Luca Ludwin in the Zakspeed’s Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 and the third through finish line passed Bentley Team HTP’s Jeroen Bleekemolen.

Fourth were Martin Ragginger and Klaus Bachler (GW IT Racing Team Schütz Motorsport), fifth place won BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert pair Claudia Hurtgen and Uwe Alzen while the sixth were kfzteile24 MS Racing pair Daniel Dobitsch and Edward Sandstrom in Audi.

“Mr. DTM” Bernd Schneider ended up on his debut in the ADAC GT Masters with his partner Hari Proczyk in the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 in seventh place and took his first points. Remaining points were won by Florian Stoll/Marc Basseng (kfzteile24 MS Racing), Patrick Assenheimer/Diego Alessi (Callaway Competition) and Remo Lips/Sven Barth (RWT Racing Team) in Corvette GT3.
