Ekstrom completes perfect weekend for Audi

Mattias Ekstrom has managed to win the DTM race held on Sunday at Hockenheim.  Ekstrom has given the perfect end to an excellent weekend for Audi, after Jamie Green won the race on Saturday.

Eduardo Mortara, also an  Audi driver, finished second, while the third place was clinched by experienced Garry Paffett for Mercedes.

It was an action packed race even before it started raining. Mike Rockenfeller quickly lost his pole position place, battling with Marco Wittmann, Mattias Ekstrom and Miguel Molina. After some twenty-odd minutes of racing, the rain started and the standings were completely shuffled.

For some drivers, there was trouble even before the start of the race. Lucas Auer had an accident in the formation lap so he had to retire. After the start, Ekstrom took the lead in the first corner followed by Wittmann and Mortara leaving Rockenfeller at fourth.

There were few scraps between in the first few laps, with the drivers fighting to gain best possible positions before the rain which started slightly in the seventh lap. Champion Wittmann went first to change tyres, followed by Mortara, Paffett and Farfus. Soon after that, Ekstrom also went into the pit, followed by majority of the drivers what resulted with some mess caused by Maxime Martin, so he was punished with drive through penalty.

Paffett started as second from behind, but soon he was in the middle of the grid, obviously enjoying wet track. Ekstrom then took the lead from Mortara and stayed on the top until the end. Swede finished with an advantage of 7.3 seconds in front of Mortara, while Paffett of ART Grand Prix team finished third after epic performance in the second half of the race.

Fourth was Martin Tomczyk, in one of his most solid performances in several races. Marco Wittmann was fifth, followed by Mike Rockenfeller. Mercedes’ boys Robert Wickens and Pascal Wehrlein were next, with BMW’s Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock closing the points’ positions.
