Fong joins Lotus as development driver

Adderly Fong has moved one step closer to his career goal of becoming the first Chinese Formula 1 driver after joining Lotus F1 team as a development driver.

The Hong Kong born racer will undergo a driver development programme alongside simulator work aimed towards improving the E23 Hybrid. He will also work with the team at Grand Prix. Fong (25) will combine his new role with the GP3 Series and GT Asia seasons.

Fong has some experience in Formula 1last year he drove the Sauber C31 clocking up 99 laps before becoming the first driver from Hong Kong to make his F1 practice debut during Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

With his feet firmly on the ground, Fong is looking forward to the possibilities of his new role.

“This is a great opportunity to further my racing career. I’ll be able to learn how an F1 team operates during race weekends. These invaluable experiences are going to lay the foundations of my future development as an F1 driver. I am happy, but I am not going to get carried away, for this is only the first of many steps,” said Fong.

“I aim to become the first Chinese driver to compete in a Formula 1 Grand Prix which will assist me to promote the sport in China and also in Hong Kong. There is great potential for me with Lotus F1 Team so I can’t wait to get started in my new role,” he added.
