Czech rally driver Martin Prokop, the best privateer in the current WRC season rankings, announced that he will enter the 2016 Dakar Rally in January next year. He became the latest WRC star to confirm his debut participation at the famous cross-country event, after Mikko Hirvonen joined X-Raid Team and Sebastien Loeb entered Peugeot’s factory team.

Prokop will drive the Toyota Hilux V8 of Belgium’s Overdrive Racing. Another member of the same team is Saudi Yazeed Al Rajhi, who competes in the WRC2 category but has a lot of experience in cross-country rallying. Prokop tested the Toyota last month and impressed Overdrive director Jean-Marc Fortin, who offered him the drive.

Prokop will continue testing Toyota at the end of October, after RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada (22 – 25 October). The 2016 Dakar Rally will take place from 2nd to 16th January in Argentina and Bolivia, so Prokop will miss the opening round of 2016 WRC season, if it will be Rallye Monte-Carlo.
