Defending FIA World Rallycross Championship title defender Mattias Ekstrom will miss out the round at Holjes, Sweden, in the first weekend of July.

The experienced Swedish driver will race in the DTM round at Norisring and will try to pick as many points to stay in the battle for the title. Ekstrom is currently fourth in the standings with 62 points, just eight points behind the championship leader and another Audi driver Rene Rast.

The Audi Motorsport director Dieter Gass said it was a difficult decision because Ekstrom is in a promising position in both series but the fact is that the DTM is a priority to Audi and Mattias has an opportunity to win his third DTM title.

“I’m happy that my boss made the decision in my stead. It’s too bad that there is a scheduling conflict just between my home race in Holjes and one of my favorite DTM races. I would have loved to contest both events but from a logistic point of view, doing so unfortunately is impossible,” comments Ekstrom.

In the 17 Norisring races held since 2001, Ekstrom secured six podiums but never made it to the top step.
