F3: Gunther wins race 1 at Norisring

The winner of the 2017 FIA Formula 3 Championship race 1 at Norisring is the Prema Powerteam driver Maximilian Gunther.

For the first time in his F3 career Jake Hughes started from pole position after being only two-thousandths of a second faster than Lando Norris. Pedro Piquet and Maximilian Gunther started from the second row. Hughes started well and kept his lead while German driver jumped to the 2nd position. The championship leader Joel Eriksson started from P17 but he quickly progressed to the 8th place.

Eriksson’s chances of scoring the podium finish became even better after the full course yellow was announced after Joey Mawson crashed badly into the barriers some 18 before the end of the race. In a meantime, Norris gained back P2 from Gunther who quickly became the race leader. Unfortunately, Norris and Hughes collided and the Hitech Racing driver went into the barriers while Norris dropped to the 3rd position and received 20s penalty.

With a help of fortune, Gunther won the race and scored his fourth win of the season what propelled him to the top of the championship standings. Pedro Piquet finished 2nd what is his best result this year so far. Guanyu Zhou completed the podium while Joel Eriksson finished 4th in the opening race of the weekend.
