Porsche Supercup Spa - race 1

The first race of the weekend started at 18:20 on the legendary race track of Spa-Francorchamps. Massive grid of 34 drivers is not something you see in all supercar races but the importance of a Belgian GP and fantastic Spa circuit is something that drivers don’t want to miss and from 34 drivers, 33 are battling for points. However, Jean Glorieux’s Porsche was so damaged from the incident in practice session that he couldn’t get it repaired for the main race, so the final number of drivers on the start was 33.

The race started with Ammermuller and Eng in the first row. The tricky first corner of Spa and 33 drivers who rushed into it caused a few spins but nothing serious. Connor de Phillippi was one of the drivers involved in the spin. Ammermuller jumped to the first place with Eng behind. By the third lap, Ammermuller was leading in front of Eng and Sven Muller. Unfortunately, Ammermuller had an accident very soon in lap four. He hit the barriers, rolled and damaged his car extensively. Fortunately, he was not hurt but the car was out of the race and possibly not ready for tomorrow’s second race of the weekend. Safety car went on the track and slowed the race a bit. After that, Phillip Eng took the lead in front of Sven Muller but Muller pressed hard behind Eng as other drivers tried to gain better positions.

Race continued in lap six with all the drivers close to each other after the safety car. In lap 7, Muller attacked Eng in third corner with Eng being on right side of the track and Muller on the left approaching a corner. Eng made mistake and hit the brakes too hard, opening enough space for Muller to pass which he did in great style, gaining the first position. Right from that moment, Muller had open space to drive as fast as he could so in just a few laps he managed to gain a 3-second lead from the rest of the grid.
