FIA GT World Cup - Maro Engel wins Qualification Race at Macau

Maro Engel is the winner of FIA GT World Cup Qualification race at Macau Guia street circuit. In #1 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 of Mercedes AMG Driving Academy Engel crossed the finish line 1.697s behind Aston Martin’s factory driver Stefan Mücke in #97 Craft BambooVantage GT3, but Mücke was penalized after the race and Engel was promoted to the first place. The stewards of the meeting investigated the restart during the race and concluded that Mücke braked before the restart, which resulted in Maro Engel having to take avoiding action.

22 drivers competed at famous street circuit and all but one finished the race. On Lap 3 Adderly Fong crashed in #8 Bentley Continental GT3 of Team Absolute and race was stopped. After six laps behind the safety car it was restarted for four more laps at full speed.

Five-time Macau winner Edoardo Mortara in Audi R8 LMS of Audi Sport Team Phoenix finished third, but after Mücke’s penalty Mortarais second and Mücke is third. Renger van der Zande in another Mercedes AMG Driving Academy car finished fourth, just a couple of tenths of a second ahead of Audi Sport Team WRT’s René Rast. Craft Bamboo drivers Richard Lyons and Darryl O’Young took sixth and eighth with their Aston Martin Vantage GT3s, with Le Mans winner Earl Bamber finishing between them in LKM Racing Porsche 997 GT3 R. Today’s results determined starting grid for tomorrow’s main race.
