Rookie Ralf Aron and poleman Max Günther F3 winners at Hungaroring

The rookie Ralf Aron and experienced Maximilian Günther, both drivers of Prema Powerteam, are the winners of Saturday’s races of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at Hungaroring. Günther was a pole sitter in both races but he managed to win only the second race. The first race finished with a surprise and three rookie drivers on the podium: Estonian Ralf Aron, Finn Niko Kari and Swed Joel Eriksson.

After starting from pole, Günther lost his lead at the start from George Russell. Ralf Aron and Lance Stroll also overtook Günther in the opening lap. The race was shortly interrupted with Safety car intervention after the collision of Callum Ilott and Ben Barnicoat. After the restart, Russell came under pressure from Aron, who overtaked him on Lap 9. On lap 15, Motorpark drivers Niko Kari and Joel Erikson were next to overtake Russell and they reached the podium.

Behind three rookies Lance Stroll finished fourth. Maximilian Günther took the chequered flag in fifth ahead of Alessio Lorandi, Sérgio Sette Camara, Guan Yu Zhou, Ben Barnicoat and Mikkel Jensen.

The second 22-lap race at the 4.381-km long circuit was clear of the Safety car interventions and with less position changes. Günther led from start to the end and crossed the finish line with comfortable 3.676sec advantage over Ralf Aron.

Victory promoted Günther to the first place of the provisional championship standings after five races, with one more race scheduled for tomorrow at the Hungaroring. Ralf Aron was second and previous leader Nick Cassidy felt to third. Cassidy started from sixth place but spun in the opening lap and dropped to the back of the field.

For the third place on the podium there was an intense battle between George Russell and Guanyu Zhou. After few attacks, the Chinese drivers succeed and gets close to the leaders in a closing laps. Sergio Sette Camara defended fifth place from Alessio Lorandi. Mikkel Jensen, Lance Stroll, Callum Ilott and Ben Barnicoat completed the top 10.
