Richie Stanaway scores first GP2 win in Monaco
After Stoffel Vandoorne’s win yesterday, the second Monaco race started after a restart caused by Sorensen’s stall with Richie Stanaway immediately overtaking Raffaele Marciello who was starting the race on pole. Soon after, Rio Haryanto was out of the race after his collision with Norman Nato, which caused a virtual safety car, as well as Johnny Cecotto who made contact with Zoel Amberg on lap 1. Marciello was closely followed by Sergey Sirotkin and Julian Leal on third and fourth, and Leal himself was being attacked heavily by Sergio Canamasas. On lap seven, Canamasas finally made the move on Turn 1 and went to fourth, aiming for the podium finish. Vandoorne battled with Alexander Rossi for seventh, but couldn’t get past him in the first ten laps of the race.
As Richie Stanaway was expanding his gap to 3,5 seconds on lap 17 all eyes were on Artem Markelov who was closing down on Rene Binder for fifteenth position in the best battle of the race. With ten laps to go, Stanaway has increased his lead to over four seconds. On the chicane, Jordan King caused a yellow flag when he went up in the air by rear ending Pierre Gasly’s car. Status Grand Prix and Richie Stanaway won their first GP2 race with 2.0s over Raffaele Marciello, while Sergey Sirotkin was on third. The top three was followed by Canamasas, Leal, Pic, Rossi, Vandoorne, Yelloly and Gasly, the last one in top ten.
