Thompson returns to the WTCC

Former World Touring Cars Championship race winner James Thompson returns to the series for the WTCC Race of Slovakia next weekend.

The 41-year-old British driver, who has won the British Touring Cars Championship crown twice, will replace Rene Munnich behind the wheel of ALL-INKL Munnich Motorsport’s Chevrolet RML Cruze. German driver and the team owner will be unavailable due to the duties in the World Rallycross Championship which kicks-off in Portugal.

New chance for a true legend

Thompson returns to the seat after one year. In 2015, he started the campaign with Lada Sport but parted ways with the Russian team early. Now he will have a new chance to test himself with an independent team.

“We are very happy to welcome true legend James Thompson to our team. The most important thing for James next weekend will be track timeto drive and learn the car. And in the races, we hope that his great experience will help him to finish both races in a good position,” said Munnich Motorsport team manager Dominik Grainer.

Expect more changes from Munnich Motorsport

This won’t be the last drivers change for MUnnich Motorsport in WTCC this year. Rene Munnich will miss at least six WTCC rounds this year due to date clashes with World Rallycross Championship. Thompson’s engagement with the team is one-off but cooperation could be continued in the future, depending on the results.
