Alex Lynn triumphs in thrilling race at Hockenheim
Alex Lynn won the action-packed GP2 Series sprint race at Hockenheim what is second win of the season for the British driver of DAMS team.
Front row at the start of the race was reserved for Antonio Giovinazzi and Alex Lynn while Pierre Gasly, who finished 3rd on Saturday, was excluded from the race so he in the sprint race started from the back of the grid.
However, Giovinazzi had a very poor start leaving Lynn to take the lead while Oliver Rowland moved up to the second. The race was pretty quiet until lap 7 when Norman Nato and Nabil Jeffri collided and caused virtual safety car.
When the race was restarted, Giovinazzi was penalized with 5 seconds after an accident with Gustav Malja and nervous Italian soon was out of the race after making a mistake on lap 14. Lynn still had a comfortable lead while Malja, Saturday’s race winner Sergey Sirotkin, and Charles Pic all were very close, almost within a second.
It was an absolutely epic battle in the last three laps. Lynn’s lead never was in doubt and he scored his second win of the season but for the remaining podium spots, we saw the fight between five drivers. At the end, Sirotkin took second place while Pic finished at the third position. Luca Ghiotto was fourth while Rowland dropped to the fifth place.
Round 8 of GP2 Series will go on at Spa-Francorchamps, August 27-28.
