GP2 Series: Gasly wins at Spa and takes the championship lead
Pierre Gasly (Prema Racing) takes his third win of the season in Saturday’s Feature race of the GP2 Series event at Spa-Francorchamps. The French youngster showed impressive performance at 7,004 meters long Grand Prix circuit and takes the championship lead after fifteen races. The podium was completed by Jordan King (Racing Engineering) and Alex Lynn (DAMS).
Gasly started the race from the front row, next to his teammate Antonio Giovinazzi. The Italian had a terrible startd and dropped to fifth place. Gustav Malja took the lead, ahead of Pierre Gasly, Norman Nato and Jordan King. On Lap 5, Gasly overtook the lead from Malja and remained in front until his pit stop on Lap 7. The new leader was Artem Markelov, who had a different pit stop strategy. He stayed in front until his tyre change on Lap 19.
The crucial moment in the podium fight happened at the end of Lap 19, when Norman Nato’s car stopped at the finish line. He retired from third place, handing the podium to Alex Lynn. Raffaele Marciello finished in the fourth place, ahead of Markelov, Giovinazzi, Ghiotto and Malja.
The battle for the last two positions among point scorers was resolved in the very last turn, when Sergio Canamasas and Oliver Rowland collided. Sergey Sirotkin jumped to the 9th place, Rowland takes 10th while Canamasas earnes no points.
Prior to Belgian round, Sirotkin and Gasly were tied in the championship lead, now Gasly is sole leader.
