Markelov wins thrilling F2 season opener
Artem Markelov is the winner of the thrilling 2017 FIA Formula 2 Championship season-opening race at Bahrain International Circuit. It was really exciting Feature race, with many overtaking and excitement, so we expect to see more of the same on Sunday in the Sprint race.
Charles Leclerc started from pole position after being faster than his Prema teammate Antonio Fuoco who later was handed a 3-place grid penalty. That’s why Rapax driver Nyck de Vries was pushed up to the front row while from the second row started Norman Nato (Arden) and Luca Ghiotto (Russian Time).
Nato was the man who impressed in the opening phase of the race as he took the lead on lap 3. Artem Markelov of Russian Time also did a great job as he moved up to the 3rd position after starting from P7. The Monegasque driver reclaimed the lead on lap 8 and Nato was put under pressure from Markelov who managed to take P2 from Nato before pit-stop.
When all drivers completed pit-stop, Nato took the lead from Leclerc while Markelov dropped to the 3rd place, followed by de Vries and DAMS driver Oliver Rowland. Nato’s lead was quite comfortable but Markelov literally was flying around the track. The Russian driver overtook Leclerc with three laps to go and soon he also was in front of Nato.
Markelov absolutely deserved a victory while Nato and Leclerc had to settle for 2nd and 3rd position respectively. Jordan King (MP Motorsport) also did a great job as he finished 4th after starting from P11.
