Formula 2: Matsushita wins in Barcelona after Latifi's mistake

  • Nobuharu Matsushita, F2, Barcelona

Nobuharu Matsushita is the winner of the second race of the FIA Formula 2 Championship weekend at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. For the 23-year-old Japanese driver of ART Grand Prix team it’s the maiden F2 victory and the third win in the premium ladder series, after two wins in GP2 Series previously.

The victory for Matsushita is in a fact a present from Nicholas Latifi. The Canadian who drives for DAMS had a blistering start, jumping from P3 into the lead and staying in front comfortably for 21 laps (of 26). And then, on lap 22, he made an unforced error and went into a gravel, immediately losing a lead to Matshushita. Few moments later, Latifi’s teammate Oliver Rowland also passed by him, taking the second place on a podium. Latifi finished third.

Yesterday’s winner Charles Leclerc (Prema) started from P8 and made a significant progress to fourth place. Gustav Malja (Racing Engineering) completed the top 5. Artem Markelov (Russian Time), who started from pole due to reversed grid, had a catastrophic start and dropped to P9 in the opening lap. He finished in the same place, behind Jordan King (6th), Luca Ghiotto (7th) and Alex Albon (8th). Johnny Cecotto Jr finished in the 10th place.
